Minor Illness Advice Temperatures - If your child has a temperature you should try and cool them down. Do not overheat the room or wrap them up too warm. Use Paracetamol at the recommended dose for their age. Tepid sponging can also be effective. Colds - The symptoms of colds i.e. runny or blocked nose, sore throat and tickly cough may last for several days. Colds are caused by viruses and even today Doctors are unable to cure them. Go to bed, take Paracetamol to ease the symptoms and take plenty of fluids. Flu - Flu is also due to a virus and therefore will not be helped by antibiotics. It usually lasts for several days. It causes fever, aches and pains and general feelings of illness. You do not usually have a runny nose. Go to bed, take Paracetamol and take plenty of fluids. Diarrhoea & Vomiting - Adults & Children - This is usually caused by a virus infection. Drugs are rarely helpful and can make things worse. Avoid food for at least 24 hours and drink plenty of watery liquids (not milk) in small amounts frequently. If the symptoms persist or if you are worried, then it is wise to phone for advice. Diarrhoea & Vomiting - Babies - Sometimes this can be more serious. It is important to give the baby plenty of small amounts of fluid frequently, breast fed babies should continue to be fed. If the baby is not taking fluids or the diarrhoea or vomiting persist contact the surgery for advice. Back Pain - Back pain is very common, usually the pain will have have been caused by lifting or bending. Prevention - keep your back straight when lifting objects and bend at the knees rather than scoop over. Treatment - if you do get back pain rest the back by laying down. Take pain killers to relieve the pain and consult your Doctor if the pain persists for more than a few days. Burns & Scalds - Apply large quantities of cold water to the effected area as soon as possible and maintain this until the pain subsides. if the area of skin is large or the skin blisters contact the surgery for advice.
